Our Glass Cutting Capabilities

At Swift Glass, we can cut glass into nearly any size or shape from a variety of materials. Using CAD-compatible software to integrate drawings, we can deliver high-precision cuts with 2- and 3-axis CNC machining with fast turnarounds for finished parts and products. Our capabilities allow us to cut glass up to 0.3 mm thick and widths up to 9 in. We can cut coated, taped, and etched glass and accommodate tolerances within +/- 0.01 in. These capabilities fulfill the needs of a wide range of applications.

Swift Glass also delivers several secondary glass fabrication services, including:

Surface lapping or polishing

Surface lapping is a process that delivers the clients’ tolerance, flatness, parallelism, and surface finish requirements by using abrasive materials to polish the workpiece.

Edge grinding

Edge grinding is a procedure that creates a scratch-free edge to the glass for architectural, medical, and aerospace applications.

Chemical strengthening

Chemical strengthening. This chemical treatment process strengthens the glass without warping the surface. It enhances the glass’s durability, strength, and temperature resistance for energy, laboratory, and semiconductor applications.

Thermal tempering

Thermal tempering. This process applies extreme heating and cooling to the glass material to increase its strength. If broken, the glass fractures into small rounded particles less likely to cause harm. It is ideal for lighting, appliance, and vehicle glass.

Drilling

Drilling. A fabrication method that allows us to drill precise holes in various glass materials. Our diamond-tipped drill bits cut materials up to 0.75 in. thick with a +/- 0.01 in. tolerance.

CNC machining

CNC machining. Computer numerical control (CNC) machining can precision cut and fabricate various materials using a client’s drawing or CAD model. It is suitable for precise aerospace, automotive, and medical components.

Waterjet cutting

Waterjet cutting. A versatile cutting method that can cut various widths and thicknesses of many materials using a high-powered stream of water. This precise cutting technique is ideal for fabricating solar panels, semiconductor wafers, and ornamental components.

Laser Glass Cutting

Laser glass cutting is a fabrication method that uses advanced photonics laser technology to create micron-level cuts with minimal taper. Our system drills holes as small as 50 µm and as large as 50 mm, cuts features up to 300 mm x 300 mm, and processes glass up to 10 mm thick with exceptional speed and accuracy.

We utilize an array of advanced cutting technologies selected based on material type, thickness, and geometric complexity:

  • Laser Glass Cutting: Utilizing proprietary fiber laser technology for micron-level accuracy, producing pristine, micro-crack-free edges that eliminate the need for secondary finishing.
  • CNC Waterjet Cutting: Equipped with 2-axis and 3-axis systems, using an omni-directional jet stream to cut intricate profiles in material up to 12 inches thick with ±0.01″ precision.
  • Diamond Wire Sawing: Traditional high-efficiency methods optimized for high-volume rectangular blanks and linear profiles.

We work with a broad spectrum of industrial and optical materials sourced from global leaders like Corning® and SCHOTT, including:

  • Soda-Lime Glass (common flat, patterned, and display substrates)
  • Borosilicate Glass (including SCHOTT Borofloat®)
  • Quartz and Fused Silica (Corning® 7980)
  • Sapphire and exotic optical crystal materials
  • Specialty-coated, etched, or taped surfaces
  • …and more!

Our cutting capabilities accommodate an extensive specification matrix:

  • Laser Cutting: Substrate thicknesses from 50 µm up to 10 mm; features laser-drilled hole sizes down to 50 µm with negligible taper.
  • Waterjet Cutting: Able to process materials from 0.1 mm up to 12 inches thick, maintaining a standard precision tolerance of ±0.01 inches.

Our programming department accepts all standard 2D and 3D CAD files, including DXF, DWG, and STEP formats. For the fastest turnaround, ensure your 2D DXF profiles are completely closed, all geometry resides on a single layer, and non-essential construction lines, annotations, or dimensions are cleared from the cutting layer.

Machine time and material utilization are the primary cost drivers in production. To maximize value, we recommend nesting parts efficiently within standard raw sheet sizes, ordering in higher production volumes to amortize setup costs, and specifying laser cutting for intricate features where eliminating secondary edge-polishing procedures can reduce post-processing expenditures.
